Gradual modernization with low-code streamlines public IT

A new low-code development platform makes it easy for a Danish public authority to add new features to old IT systems. This provides increased flexibility and improved case management.

A new low-code development platform makes it easy for a Danish public authority to add new features to its legacy IT systems. The result is increased flexibility and improved case handling.

Case in brief:

  • Challenge: A need for new features in a complex and outdated IT landscape that was difficult to update.

  • Solution: A new low-code development platform that enables building on top of existing systems without heavy coding.

  • Outcome: More flexible and user-friendly IT that can be quickly and securely adapted to new legislation and changing needs.

When legislation and organizational needs change, digital tools need to keep up. However, a Danish public authority experienced that updating the IT systems - relied on by thousands of employees in case handling in regards to supervision and documentation, was heavy and time-consuming.

Over the years, the authority’s IT landscape had grown fragmented, and several systems had become outdated. They therefore turned to NNIT for help with a large-scale modernization.

The new solutions needed to run alongside existing ones to ensure a smooth transition. It was equally important that both new and old solutions could make use of the same data. The modernization had to be gradual and carefully planned.

Modernization with low-code

The solution was the low-code development platform OutSystems, which enables building on top of existing systems using modules instead of extensive coding from scratch.

Low-code technology is therefore ideal when you want to modernize your IT landscape and ensure better performance, greater user-friendliness, and a high degree of flexibility.

The authority managed the project themselves, while NNIT specialists developed the solutions. This created close collaboration in joint SCRUM teams, ensuring that new political requirements could quickly be translated into user-friendly functions.

From project kick-off in spring 2022 to the launch of the first Minimum Viable Product (MVP), only a few months passed.

From paper processes to effective use of data

The first solution, a digital reporting tool, replaced paper-based processes for company inspections and ensured improved data collection.

Development then accelerated: more new applications were added, and existing systems were upgraded with new features.

Today, the authority has far more flexible systems, allowing them to react quickly and adapt to new legislation. This is crucial to ensuring employees can work efficiently and maintain the highest possible quality in their tasks.
