End-to-End LIMS and Equipment Integration for Regulated Environments

Ignition SCADA-based LIMS integrating lab instruments and workflows to enable compliant, automated, and scalable lab operations with improved traceability.

Case in brief:

  • Challenge: Manual lab data handling, limited equipment integration, and compliance demands (21 CFR Part 11) slowed testing and increased risk

  • Solution: Ignition SCADA-based LIMS pilot integrating lab equipment, SQL historian, and Active Directory

  • Benefit: Automated workflows, compliant data capture, and a scalable pilot ready for rollout

Manual Processes Limiting Control and Compliance

The client’s lab processes relied on fragmented systems and manual data entry across equipment, test records, and reporting. This led to inefficiencies, increased the risk of human error, and made compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 more complex.

Limited integration between lab instruments such as HPLC and scales, LIMS processes, and enterprise systems restricted data visibility and traceability. As a result, testing speed, reporting accuracy, and overall operational control across filling, canning, and packaging lines were impacted.

“Enabling the Lab instrument integration has delivered a connected environment with automated workflows that are measurable and audit ready.".

Connected LIMS with Automated Workflows

A LIMS Equipment Systems Integration solution was developed using Ignition SCADA as the core platform. Lab instruments, including HPLC systems and scales, were integrated with SQL databases, a data historian, and Active Directory.

The system introduced automated test step sequences, workflow-driven execution, and report generation through a SCADA web interface. It enabled secure data capture, parameter control, calibration tracking, and electronic records aligned with 21 CFR Part 11. A pilot solution was delivered to validate the concept and support future site-wide rollout.

From Concept to Compliant Delivery

NNIT managed the full project lifecycle from concept design through commissioning and handover. The team designed compliant workflows, removed manual data entry points, and ensured seamless integration with site ERP and production systems.

A complete GAMP5 validation package was delivered, supporting regulatory readiness. NNIT’s expertise in life sciences compliance, SCADA integration, and equipment connectivity ensured the solution is scalable, audit-ready, and aligned with future expansion needs.
