Enabling a Next-Generation Pharma Manufacturing Facility with Full Digital Integration

A global pharmaceutical manufacturer established a next-generation smart vaccine manufacturing facility by embedding Industry 4.0 and Pharma 4.0 principles from the outset. With NNIT supporting the initiative end-to-end across project management, quality and validation, and deep IT/OT integration, the site achieved full vertical and horizontal integration, improved supply chain reliability, and established itself as a state-of-the-art Factory of the Future.

Two people discussing something on a screen.

Case in brief:

  • Challenge: Construction of a next-generation, fully digitalized smart vaccine manufacturing facility that integrates Pharma 4.0™ concepts

  • Solution: Vertical & Horizontal Integration: High-level system integration from the shop floor to enterprise level

  • Benefit: Improved reliability of the vaccine supply chain and considered state of the art example of a “Factory of the Future”

Integrating Advanced Manufacturing Under Extreme Time Pressure

To meet rising global vaccine demand, the pharmaceutical manufacturer set out to build a next-generation manufacturing facility designed from the ground up around Industry 4.0 and Pharma 4.0 principles.

The ambition was clear: achieve maximum efficiency, flexibility, and compliance across all production processes while ensuring a reliable, future-proof supply chain. Delivering this vision required seamless end‑to‑end integration of advanced manufacturing and filling equipment with digital IT/OT systems under intense time pressure and in parallel with ongoing facility construction.

Internal capacity and specialized expertise were limited, requiring external support to ensure timely delivery, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness.

Building the Digital Foundation for a Smart Factory

The foundation for success was established through an early upgrade of the complete IT infrastructure, enabling advanced IT/OT integration throughout the facility. SAP EWM and electronic batch records delivered real-time performance visibility and paper-free operations.

Integration with SAP, MES, LIMS, and environmental monitoring systems enabled a fully automated “no-touch” material transport concept powered by autonomous mobile robots.

By supplementing internal teams with external specialists, the project maintained speed, quality, and compliance despite tight timelines and evolving requirements.

“The project delivered end-to-end digital connectivity based on global standards, enabling a state-of-the-art manufacturing environment.”
