PharmaNet – the foundation for efficient operations in Danish pharmacies

A modern dispensing system makes it easy for Danish pharmacies to deliver fast, safe, and user-friendly medication handling, while preserving the stable back end. This provides a flexible foundation for the pharmacies of the future and improved service for citizens.

Summary:

  • Challenge: A complex, outdated IT landscape with critical applications that were difficult to update and required long training times.

  • Solution: Modernization using the low-code platform OutSystems, providing a modern, user-friendly interface on top of the stable back end.

  • Outcome: Faster processing, reduced training time, and a flexible foundation that can be adapted to new needs and regulatory requirements without disrupting operations.

The pharmacies’ dispensing system is the very backbone of medication distribution in Denmark. For decades, it has handled prescriptions, sales transactions, and mandatory regulatory processes, but over time the user experience became heavy and the technology difficult to update.

DataPharm, which operates IT platforms for a large number of Danish pharmacies, was managing a complex system landscape developed over 20 years. Everything from prescription processing to inventory management was integrated, but deployment was slow and training new employees was time-consuming. To future-proof the platform without disrupting daily operations, DataPharm chose the low-code solution OutSystems.

Modernization with low-code

PharmaNet Dispensing was developed as a modern web-based solution using OutSystems, while the well-proven back end was retained as a microservice. This created a consistent and intuitive user experience across 3,200 terminals that handle around 110,000 sales transactions daily.

The project was carried out gradually over 36 months by a team of 12 developers. Old and new systems ran in parallel, while feature toggles made it possible to activate and deactivate new functionality directly in production. This approach enabled issues to be resolved more quickly and without interruptions to operations or customer service.

From heavy interface to fast customer service

The result is significant efficiency gains:

  • Prescription handling reduced from 9 to 6 clicks

  • Sales flow reduced from 9 to 4 clicks

  • Mouse-free operation enabling faster and more ergonomic workflows

  • Developer onboarding reduced from 3 months to 3 weeks

The system brings together customer data, prescriptions, and sales information on a single screen and automatically supports the complex regulatory requirements of the pharmacy sector. This allows pharmacists to spend more time with customers and on advisory services, rather than navigating heavy technical logic.

It’s well thought out and logical. The automatic dispensing function means you have time to look customers in the eye – and the training is so straightforward that a colleague was able to return from maternity leave and get started again with almost no introduction.
