Digital transformation: Stories from the field

Digital transformation has become a top priority on the boardroom agenda. But how are companies handling the digitalization process, and what does it mean to their businesses?

Through a series of interviews with selected CIOs from some of Denmark's biggest companies, you can now get the inside scoop.

No organizations are the same. Culture, management style, organization, and leadership differentiate – even among companies that operate in the same industry or share similarities on paper.

However, there is something that all bigger organizations have in common: in recent years, they have been fighting to create business growth through digital transformation and the use of new technologies.

Digital transformation has been a long time coming. For years, buzzwords such as cloud, agility, and digital scaling have characterized the agenda. Yet, there are still great differences between individual organizations in terms of how far they for example have come on the cloud journey – and how they are working structured with digitalization.

Though, one is for sure: agility and the ability to transform digitally have never been more important. When the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world in the spring of 2020, organizations were forced to find new ways of keeping their business running in tense situations; they needed to run remote business, while client meetings had to take place online. This illustrated that the organizations who are at the forefront of digitalization also are the most agile and the ones best armed for times of big external changes.

For example, you can learn how Danish Crown CIO, Elo Bromer, is waving the conductor's baton to create greater harmony in digital investments. One of the goals is to save DKK 800 million a year on procurement by optimizing and centralizing processes.

At the Danish pension fund, AP Pension, the digital strategy is closely linked to the customer experience. Efficient, agile IT systems and customer-facing solutions provide the most loyal and satisfied customers. Here, machine learning plays an important part in building closer relationships with customers.

At the same time, the digitalization process has left its mark all over another familiar company. Over the last twelve months, Lundbeck has added both a dedicated cloud department and a science department to its IT division's organizational diagram.

It is our hope that you, dear reader, by diving into this series of articles, will be both inspired and surprised, and perhaps even challenged. No matter our differences, we can still learn from each other and draw inspiration from other companies' ways of doing things.
