Good Requirements Are Key to Good Systems

At NNIT we care about good requirements

When you need a new IT system or changes to an existing system, relevant requirements must be defined and described.

This could be as user stories, traditional requirements, functional specifications, or perhaps a graphic model.

This is not an easy task. Some of the indicators of good requirements are that they are complete, consistent, implementable, prioritized, testable, unambiguous, and valid. The quality of the requirements is reflected in the system delivered to the customer.

Another point is, that the later in a development project a defect is identified, the more expensive it is to correct the defect and any side effects it may have caused. The cheapest place in time to find and correct a defect is during the establishment of the requirements, and the most expensive time is when the system is in use.

This is true for both agile and V-model development. The business case for taking the time to perform static test of requirements is one of the best you can get.

At NNIT we are skilled in securing the quality of requirements before they are used as the basis for further development.

We can

  • Introduce your organization to the concept of good functional as well as non-functional requirements. The latter expressing the behavior of the defined functionality, in terms of for example performance or availability.
  • Introduce your requirements’ stakeholders to the various static test techniques, including review, walk-through, and inspection.
  • Introduce your requirements’ stakeholders to the various ways of documenting requirements in order to make them suitable for other stakeholders, such as testers.
  • Facilitate requirements workshops with future users, developers, testers, and other relevant stakeholders working together to define a set of requirements for a new system or changes to an existing system.
  • Document your requirements in cooperation with your employees to fit the context the best way possible depending on the nature of the requirements.
  • Perform static test of your requirements in cooperation with your team using appropriate static test technique(s), and provide advice for improvements, if needed.
At the NNIT Test Excellence Center we are dedicated and have a passion for adding business value from good requirements. We take pride in meeting our customers’ expectation every time.
