This is how IT Operations retain control in a Cloud world

When an organization scales up the digital transformation with Cloud, many IT Operations departments find it difficult to keep track of the initiatives. The solution is a structured approach that gives operators control over budgets and billing without hampering agility and creativity.

In many organizations, a successful Cloud Enablement marks the transition to a new world where digital transformation makes a significant mark. The developers in the Development department can suddenly work smarter and faster than ever before. Servers and other hardware become less essential components because the necessary infrastructure can be spun up in the cloud at short notice.

However, it is not certain that this brave new world will cause enthusiasm in every part of the organization. At IT Operations, experienced professionals may find that the digital transformation is rapidly eroding decades of incorporated processes and best practices.

The Wild IT West

Gone are the days when all IT orders had to be approved first and then carefully registered in ITIL. For some organizations, it may feel like the Wild IT West, where new initiatives are being launched left and right, test projects go directly into production and expenses are thrown into the arms of the Operations department without warning.

This can easily lead to an IT Operations department with permanently crossed arms, which slows down new projects in an attempt to regain control over spending and use of resources. This unfortunate reaction risks undermining the business value of the creativity and agility that is the very point of the digital transformation.

Time for classic operating virtues 2.0

This kind of friction is inevitable if one half of the organization transforms while the other holds on to an old operating paradigm. Like the developers in the Development department, the IT Operations staff needs to be equipped with new tools and new ways of working if the digital transformation is to be viable.

It is therefore time for version 2.0 of the classic operating virtues, where innovation lifecycles can be shortened with methods like self-service, standardization and support for programmatic provisioning. What is crucial is to create a foundation that can support both traditional deliveries and the agile environment. This can be done by building a solid foundation platform where automatic processes retain control just behind the creative space.

A dynamic look in the engine room

Where everything in the old world should both be ordered and registered correctly, in the new world only registration is crucial. Rather than having to rely on cumbersome approval procedures to stay in control, IT Operations are now directly involved through DevOps and agile methods and can follow the initiatives in the pipeline. And instead of referencing Service Now and other ITSM tools, Azure dashboards now provide the full overview.

The new tools also provide a more dynamic look into the engine room. With a Configuration Management Database like UCMDB, it is possible to keep track of all assets across both Cloud and on-premise, down to the smallest SIM card. So instead of spending many hours generating a static image of the state of operations for the monthly reporting, all resources can now be tracked in real time.

The transition to the tools and methods of the new world does not happen overnight.  It is important to have respect for the procedures and competencies that need to be adjusted - and to ensure that the changes happen at a pace where everyone can follow. There are traditions and emotions at stake for those Operations people who have often spent their entire careers honing their operating skills. On the other hand, successful renewal can kick your digital transformation into a whole new gear.
